This bird, the largest of herons in North America, forages while wading and impales its meal with its sharp, spear-like bill. This bird eats small fish, frogs, insects, and snakes. It also strikes at mice, squirrels, ducklings- or about anything else it might come across. Herons have been known to choke to death on too-large of prey.
